Saudi Arabia Launches Special Operations Rooms as Umrah Pilgrim Numbers Surge 214%
Saudi Arabia has introduced specialized operations rooms to better manage the sharp rise in overseas Umrah pilgrims, as the Kingdom continues to witness unprecedented growth in religious tourism. The initiative comes in response to a dramatic increase in international arrivals, which have surged by more than 214 percent since 2022. The move reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to accommodating growing demand.
The new operations rooms have been launched by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah in collaboration with multiple government bodies, including aviation and service authorities. These centres are designed to monitor pilgrim movements in real time, address logistical challenges, and ensure a smooth and safe pilgrimage experience for visitors arriving from abroad. The rooms operate around the clock during peak seasons.
Announcing the development at the Umrah and Ziyarah Forum in Madinah, Minister Tawfiq Al-Rabiah highlighted the scale of growth in the sector. He revealed that around 18 million Umrah pilgrims from outside Saudi Arabia have visited the Kingdom this year alone, marking a massive increase compared to previous years. The figures underscore the growing global appeal of Umrah.
The surge reflects Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to expand its religious tourism sector and accommodate a growing number of international visitors. Authorities have been steadily upgrading infrastructure, improving services, and introducing digital solutions to streamline the pilgrimage process. Pilgrim satisfaction levels have reportedly reached 94 percent by 2025, indicating the success of ongoing reforms and investments in the sector. In addition to operational upgrades, Saudi Arabia has expanded access to key religious sites. Visits to Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifah—one of the most revered areas in Madinah—have increased significantly, with over 15.6 million visitors recorded. Authorities have also worked on developing historical and cultural sites to enrich the overall pilgrimage experience beyond religious rituals.
The scale of growth is also reflected in the Umrah and Ziyarah Forum itself, which has become a major platform for collaboration and innovation in the sector. The event features more than 150 exhibitors and hosts around 50 workshops focused on improving services and adopting new technologies. Over 5,000 agreements are expected to be signed during the forum, aimed at strengthening partnerships and enhancing the efficiency of pilgrimage-related services.
Saudi Arabia’s leadership has been credited for prioritizing the development of the Umrah ecosystem, aligning it with the Kingdom’s broader Vision 2030 goals.
