Trump Halts Project Freedom After Saudi Arabia Blocks US Military Access
US President Donald Trump reportedly decided to halt Project Freedom, a major military operation aimed at reopening and securing shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, after Saudi Arabia refused to allow American forces access to its airspace and military bases. The development exposed growing tensions between Washington and key Gulf allies amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
According to reports, the operation was designed to escort commercial vessels trapped in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important oil shipping routes. The mission aimed to provide naval and air protection for international cargo ships amid fears of Iranian attacks and continued regional instability.
However, Saudi Arabia reportedly resisted American pressure to support the operation, fearing that direct involvement could trigger further retaliation from Iran and drag the kingdom deeper into the regional conflict. Despite personal appeals from Trump to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Riyadh allegedly refused to permit US military aircraft and operations to use Saudi territory.
The disagreement highlighted growing frustration within Gulf countries over the handling of the Iran conflict by the Trump administration. Reports suggested Saudi Arabia was increasingly concerned about what it viewed as Washington’s unpredictable strategy and insufficient protection for regional allies facing Iranian retaliation.
The United Arab Emirates was reportedly among the countries most affected by the escalation, with Iranian strikes targeting strategic infrastructure and oil facilities. Gulf nations have become increasingly cautious about appearing openly aligned with military operations against Iran due to fears of becoming direct targets themselves.
Trump publicly defended the temporary suspension of Project Freedom by citing progress in diplomatic negotiations with Tehran and requests from countries including Pakistan to allow more time for peace talks. The US administration maintained that the pause was intended to create space for negotiations aimed at reducing tensions in the Gulf region.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most sensitive maritime chokepoints, carrying nearly one fifth of global oil and gas shipments. Since the outbreak of the US Iran conflict earlier this year, shipping activity in the region has dropped sharply due to security concerns, naval confrontations, and fears of attacks on commercial vessels.
Operation Project Freedom was officially launched earlier this month as part of Washington’s broader effort to restore maritime traffic through the Gulf. The operation reportedly involved US naval escorts, surveillance aircraft, and plans for multinational support aimed at protecting neutral merchant ships.
Reports also indicated that tensions between Saudi Arabia and the UAE have intensified over differing approaches toward Iran and regional security. While the UAE has reportedly pushed for a tougher response to Tehran, Saudi Arabia has increasingly focused on avoiding escalation and protecting regional stability.
Despite the temporary suspension, the Pentagon is expected to continue preparations for future maritime operations in the Gulf. Some reports suggested Saudi Arabia and Kuwait may eventually reconsider restrictions on US military access if regional security conditions worsen further.
Meanwhile, fragile ceasefire talks between the United States and Iran continue through diplomatic intermediaries. Although both sides have shown interest in negotiations, occasional naval skirmishes and renewed military incidents near the Strait of Hormuz continue to threaten regional stability.
