Eid-ul-Fitr 2026 Expected Date: Saudi Arabia, UAE, India Moon Sighting on March 18
Riyadh/Dubai/New Delhi — Muslims around the world are preparing for Eid-ul-Fitr 2026, the festival that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. However, the exact date of the celebration will depend on the sighting of the crescent moon that signals the start of the Islamic month of Shawwal.
Religious authorities in several countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, have asked people to look for the Shawwal crescent on the evening of March 18, 2026. If the moon is sighted that evening, Eid will be celebrated the next day. If it is not visible, Ramadan will complete 30 days and the festival will be observed a day later.
In Saudi Arabia, the Supreme Court traditionally calls on Muslims across the kingdom to observe the sky on the 29th day of Ramadan to confirm the sighting of the new moon. For 2026, that observation is expected to take place on March 18.
If the crescent moon is seen that evening, Eid-ul-Fitr will fall on March 19, 2026. However, if the moon is not visible, Ramadan will continue for one more day and the festival will likely be celebrated on March 20 instead.
The UAE and several other Gulf countries usually follow Saudi Arabia's moon-sighting announcement, so Eid in these countries is also expected to fall on either March 19 or March 20, depending on the sighting.
In India, the moon is generally sighted a day after Saudi Arabia due to geographical differences. Therefore, Eid-ul-Fitr in the country is expected to be celebrated on March 20 or March 21, 2026, depending on when the crescent moon becomes visible.
Muslims across India will look for the moon on the evening following Saudi Arabia's observation. Religious authorities and mosque committees then officially announce the date after confirmation of the sighting.
The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle, meaning months begin with the appearance of the new crescent moon. Because of this system, the exact date of Islamic festivals such as Eid-ul-Fitr changes every year in the Gregorian calendar and may also differ between countries.
The night before Eid, known as Chand Raat, holds special cultural significance. Families gather for shopping, celebrations, and preparations for the festival. Markets stay open late, and people buy new clothes, sweets, and gifts.
Eid-ul-Fitr is one of the most important festivals in Islam. It marks the end of Ramadan, the month during which Muslims observe daily fasting from dawn to sunset.
The day begins with a special congregational prayer called Salat al-Eid, followed by gatherings with family and friends. People greet each other with “Eid Mubarak,” exchange gifts, and enjoy traditional dishes and sweets.
Charity is also a key part of the celebration. Muslims are required to give Zakat al-Fitr, a form of charity meant to help the less fortunate participate in the festivities.
